The GQHF has big plans for this small but important museum. We are currently designing a capital campaign to raise the funds necessary for completion of our Facilities Master Plan, $400,000 plan that will:

    San Diego Historic Museums
  • Create a fully accessible public museum entrance including a new sunken courtyard including a glass elevator for wheelchair use.
  • Renovate the existing basement for use as the museum reception center. The renovations will include areas for museum admissions and visitor information, a hands-on display area, a staging area for house tours, room for the Virtual Tour Learning Center (interactive computer driven workstations). This learning center will provide visual access to areas of the museum, which cannot be made accessible to wheelchairs without compromising the historical integrity of the house.
  • Convert existing administrative offices into period displays for the museum to take full advantage of the historical significance of the William Heath Davis House.
  • Replace "modern" appearing lighting fixtures and finishes in upper floor museum spaces in favor of historically accurate fixtures and ceiling treatments;
  • Develop historically interpretive features, lighting and safety improvements in the park adjacent to the museum.

This project is important to the Gaslamp Quarter and to the City of San Diego. The William Heath Davis Historic House Museum is a significant historical icon. It represents much of San Diego's history and culture, and stands in the heart of the largest historic district in the country.

Gaslamp QuarterThe Gaslamp Quarter, whose success is grounded in its historic nature, is evolving rapidly. Three new condominium projects (one completed), new apartments, high end restaurants and retail stores, and a 4 star hotel are planned or already underway within one block of the museum. Our goal with the Facilities Master Plan is to keep pace with the growth of the area, offer a first class museum experience for our visitors, and a unique "point of pride" landmark for the newly arriving residents.

The improvements outlined in the Facilities Master Plan encompass the vision of the GQHF to create a first class museum experience for all visitors; tourists, locals, schoolchildren, disabled groups and special needs organizations alike. The creation of the accessible museum entrance will be a welcoming visual reminder that the house is open and accessible to the public, and the new museum rooms and Virtual Tour Learning Center will generate interest and enable the Foundation to properly demonstrate the historicity of the museum and fully support our mission to promote the historical, cultural and architectural aspects of the Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego.

Your generous donation to the Gaslamp Quarter Historical Foundation will help us achieve these important goals and Grow Old, along with the historic Gaslamp Quarter! Call Tracy Silberman, Executive Director about how you can help keep history alive for the future of San Diego. (619) 233-4692
